Benny’s Bridges Gap at Cheltenham
BENNY’S BRIDGE’S GAP AT CHELTENHAM– 26 JANUARY 2019
Benny’s Bridge posted an electric finish to win the £27,500 Steel Plate and Sections Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) on Festival Trials Day at Cheltenham on Saturday, 26 January.
Making his handicap debut, the strong feeling before the race was that Benny’s Bridge would be well suited by the likely stronger gallop and his jockey Paddy Brennan was as cool as a cucumber as he settled him in last place.
Turning into the home straight Benny’s Bridge still had a great deal of ground to make up, but he gradually bridged the gap under a tight rein and was on the heels of the three leaders jumping the last. Weaving his way between horses, Benny’s Bridge soon asserted on the run in and was punched out to win by a comfortable 2¾L.
It was a truly remarkable victory for this progressive and unexposed young hurdler, who could well be heading back to Cheltenham in March, with the Imperial Cup at Sandown another alternative option.
Many congratulations to all of his syndicate owners, trainer Fergal O’Brien and jockey Paddy Brennan.
QUEEN OF PARIS 4TH AT LINGFIELD – 16 JANUARY 2019
Our first runner of the year finished graced the winners’enclosure when Queen Of Paris finished fourth on her handicap bow over 1m 5f at Lingfield on 16 January. Ridden by Callum Shepherd for William Knight, the 4yo filly had shown promise in each of her first three races and was expected to improve for the step up in trip. In fact, she appeared to need every yard of it as she finished strongly into fourth place, beaten less than two lengths at the finish. She is likely to step up to two miles next time and her winning turn should be near judged on this strong effort.
